Dry Eye

Dry, Sore, Gritty, Burning or Watery eyes?

Or sometimes known as dry eye syndrome. If you suffer from any of the above then you may have a simple problem of too little tears or they evaporate off the front of your eyes too quickly.  And the good news is its relatively simple to sort out.

Insufficient Tears

If the problem is not enough tears then the answer may be tear supplements and we carry an extensive range as different products suit different people, and you may have to try a few to find a suitable one for you. We stock:

  • Systane: often prescribed by the hospital.
  • Eye Logic: no contact spray relief and easy to apply, ideal for computer users.
  • Clinitas-Sooth: suitable for contact lens wearers
  • Clinitas-Hydrate Gel: for night use
  • Clinitas-Ultra 3: for day use

Evaporation Problems

These are often caused by a malfunction of the Meibomian glands found along the eyelid margin. These glands secrete oil that spreads over the watery tears when you blink to stop evaporation. If this oil waxes up in the pores then the tears don’t get the protection they need, evaporate quickly and the eye may feel dry and gritty.  A consequence of this is the eye reflexly produces more tears than it needs and you get a watery eye.  Computer users often suffer from this as they tend to stare and blink less. Other environmental factors such as AC, central heating, flying, and walking in wind can exacerbate the problem. An easy treatment for this is the use of an eyebag, that we stock along, with daily lid massage.
